Under The Radar - 04.01.09
Under The Radar, my weekly blog post about some of the lesser publicized books coming out this week that look interesting. This week we have a return to Marvel by Robert Kirkman, a return to a former character for Grant Morrison, the return of Barry Allen, a return of Bart Sears and more.

The Destroyer #1 (of 5) (MR)
'DESTROYER,' PART 1 (MR)

Written by Robert Kirkman; Art by Cory Walker; Cover by Jason Pearson

For sixty years, Keen Marlowe has been a super hero, taking down bad guys, fighting the good fight. But it's is about to come crashing to an end. See, Marlowe is dying -- maybe today, maybe tomorrow, the only question is when. But Marlowe isn't about to go quietly into the night. Before he goes, he intends to leave the world a safer place for his family. And if that means hunting down -- and murdering -- every super-villain he can, so be it. They don't call him 'Destroyer' for nothing.
Format: FC, 32pg., COMIC
Price: $3.99

The Walking Dead and Invincible scribe Robert Kirkman takes on a mature Marvel Max book with The Destroyer. I've seen the preview and it looks like much of what passes for 'mature' these days: blood, cursing, and psychotic behavior. Should be interesting to say the least.

The Flash: Rebirth #1 (of 5)
FLASH - REBIRTH #1 (of 5)

Written by Geoff Johns; Art and covers by Ethan Van Sciver

Through the decades, many heroes have taken the mantle of The Flash, but they all ride the lightning that crackles in the wake of the greatest hero the DC Universe has ever known, the man who sacrificed himself to save the Multiverse: Barry Allen!

Format: FC, 40pg., LIMITED SERIES
Price: $3.99

Okay, this isn't exactly an Under The Radar type book, but I just wanted to pimp this title a little more. It's Geoff Johns and Ethan Van Sciver on the return of Barry Allen. Not much more has to be said, except if this is half as good as their Green Lantern: Rebirth series, you are not going to want to miss out on it.

The Helm Vol. 1 TP
THE HELM (TP) (MR)

Written by Jim Hardison; Bart Sears (P), Randy Elliott (I), and Dan Jackson (C)

Matt Blurdy's day has gone from crap to worse. Not only did his girlfriend break his heart at work--and in front of all of the video-store patrons--but he just got fired. All that's left to do is minibike his sorry, thirty-year-old (and freshly unemployed!) butt back home to his mom's basement and drown his sorrows in a bucket of extra-crispy chicken while contemplating where his life went wrong. On the way home, Matt decides to quiet his aching heart with a brief detour to a garage sale. When an ancient-looking helmet calls to him as "the Chosen One," exhorting him to don the mantle of the "Valhalladrim," Matt touches it with trembling fingers--and is jolted by raw magical power. Holy crap! Is he going to be a superhero? Is this why he always felt special even when everyone else thought he was a loser? Then the helm gets a sense of whom it's dealing with. Suddenly, it changes its tune: "I was mistaken. You are not the chosen one. Good day."

Format: FC, 104pg., TRADE PAPERBACK
Price: $14.95

I really enjoyed this mini series in singles. The story was funny and should speak to the inner fanboy in all of us. Bart Sears art was some of his best.

Prototype #1 (of 6) (MR)
PROTOTYPE #1 (of 6) (MR)

Written by Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti Art and cover by Darick Robertson & Matt Jacobs

Acclaimed writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray (COUNTDOWN, FRIDAY THE 13TH, JONAH HEX) join forces with artistic powerhouse Darick Robertson (The Boys) for a 6-issue WildStorm epic like no other. In anticipation of the upcoming multiplatform Activision video game comes the hyperkinetic world of PROTOTYPE! Follow New York homicide detectives as they track a serial killer unlike any they've ever faced, and enter a new era where human extinction and monstrous evolution collide! Featuring a variant cover by superstar artist Jim Lee!

Format: LIMITED SERIES
Price: $3.99

If there is one writting duo whose work I will usually pick up sight unseen, it's Palmiotti & Gray. They rarely ever miss for my tastes. Add in Darick Robinson on art duties and I'm going to have a hard time saying no.

Seaguy: The Slaves of Mickey Eye #1 (of 3) (MR)
SEAGUY: THE SLAVES OF MICKEY EYE #1 (of 3) (MR)

Written by Grant Morrison Art and Cover by Cameron Stewart

In 2008 alone, superstar writer Grant Morrison killed Batman, put the entire DC Universe through its FINAL CRISIS and concluded the unanimously beloved ALL-STAR SUPERMAN. But what does a writer who's written every significant Super Hero do when he can create any Super Hero he wants? The answer, of course, is SEAGUY! Morrison (THE INVISIBLES) rejoins original SEAGUY artist Cameron Stewart (SEVEN SOLDIERS) in an all-new adventure starring the cult-favorite character!

Format: LIMITED SERIES
Price: $3.99

I have to admit that I haven't read the original Seaguy yet, but I've heard so many good things about it that I think this new series is going to make me go out and pick it up. Besides, I'm a huge Cameron Stewart fan, and no, he is not Grant's employee.
